Prof. Michael Gatari, Director INST, attended a meeting “Development, Air pollution and climate change in Africa – an integrated assessment” on invitation by Stockholm Environmental Institute (SEI), ICRAF, Nairobi, Kenya. The meeting had 19 participants (from the Region and the North) and it was about Africa integrated assessment of air pollution and climate change in Africa, 2020-2021.
Prof. Michael Gatari, Director INST, attended the Africa Group on Atmospheric Science (ANGA) Zoom Implementation Team Meeting on 13 August 2020 12:00 SAST (UTC + 2). The meeting was attended by Dr. Rebecca Garland, Dr. Andriannah Mbandi (UNEP and SEI) and Prof. Gatari. Prof Paul Beukes gave apologies.
The Agenda was:
Many engineering structures including buildings, pipelines and rails, among others, require periodic testing to prevent catastrophic failures that can occur due to corrosion, impact, and strain. High-frequency sound waves that travel in the bulk (bulk ultrasound) are widely used for non-invasive and non-destructive testing of structural materials.
Wilson Macharia Kairu, a PhD scholar at the University of Nairobi gave a seminar on his PhD work on Zoom on 9th July 2020. His research work is on the development of a method for remote inspection of the reinforced concrete structure. Part of the research work is being done at Center for Non-Destructive Testing, Indian Institute of Technology Madras through a joint MoU between the University of Nairobi and Indian Institute of Technology Madras
John Birir, Prof. Michael Gatari and Prabhu Rajagopal (Indian Institute of Technology-Madras have recently published their work on AIP Advances. Their work on improving defect resolution capability beyond the diffraction limits for guided waves inspection was also featured at the AIP Advance.
Elly Kombo Wafula, a student at INST undertaking MSc studies in Nuclear Science, is currently in Malaysia pursuing a Master in
Prof Michael Gatari (centre), Director Institute of Nuclear Science & Technology, made a visit to Rwanda's Atmospheric Observatory Centre in Kigali on 6th March 2020. S.K. Bartilol (Chief Technologist) attended the Final coordination meeting for Project RAF7016 “Establishing and Improving Air Pollution Monitoring in Africa” which took place in Harare, Zimbabwe from 17th – 21st February 2020. The event was hosted by the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry with the Permanent Secretary opening the meeting and closed by a representative.
Mr Mathius M. Mailu (left), a technologist at the Institute of Nuclear Science & Technology, travelled to Zambia on for an African Clean Energy (ACE) assessment and Evaluation. He is part of the UoN Lighting Africa Laboratory team which is involved with testing and evaluation of off-grid solar products. During his week-long stay from 24-28th February, he will be assisting the Zambia team to lay the groundwork for the establishment of off-grid energy access testing laboratory in the country.
