Neutron-Capture Prompt Gamma Ray Activation Analysis of Heavy Sands from Tiva and Mwita Syano Rivers, Kitui County

The under-investment in the mineral sands industry in Kenya is due to inadequacy of the necessary recipe for development of the sector.  As a result, the supply/demand gap has opened up in the recent and could persist for some time.  To reduce this gap, research is necessary for grading the mineral ore to actualize the economical viability of the mineral sands.  Therefore, the knowledge of mineral chemistry of geological samples (float) is necessary to shed light on the presence of the valuable resources.  To achieve this, a basic PGNAA facility at INST using an Am-Be as the neutron source is described to analyze these fragments (black sand) collected from Tiva and Mwita syano Rivers for elemental composition.  Ninety samples from the rivers are analyzed for both quantative and qualitative specifications so as to hint on their areas of application.
