Investigation on the Heavy Minerals of Economic Importance and Characterization of the Naturally Occurring Radionuclides in Mwita Syano River Bed Sands

Heavy minerals are important economic resources as they are useful in many industrial applications such as manufacturing of tiles and pigments.  Currently heavy minerals is one of the most impressive sectors to invest in due to high demand for zircon and titanium dioxide by China, India and other emerging strong global economies.  Therefore this study will be aimed on investigating heavy minerals of economic importance such as zircon, rutile, ilmentite, monazite and xenotime along 3 km of Mwita Syano River bed by gravity separation method using sodium polytungstate and X-Ray Diffraction technique.  The naturally occuring radionuclides (238U, 232Th and 40K) and the associated radiological hazards will also be determined using gamma ray spectroscopic technique.
