Measurements of Heavy Metals and Natural Radioactivity Levels in Soils around the Niobium Mining site in Kwale District

A study will be performed to obtain a data of elemental and radioactivity content of soils from several locations around the proposed niobium mining site in Kwale.  The site, located in the South coast of Kenya is rich in niobium deposits which are yet to be mined.  Apart from niobium there are other radiogenic heavy metals wich contribut to natural background radiation.  Establishment of these heavy minerals will be used to get information on the major causes of radiation.  Radiation levels will be used as a measure of radiation hazard to the public.  The activity concentration in soil samples from the site will be determined by gamma ray spectrometry using HPGe detector and then analyzed for elemental content.
