Prof. Peter J.T. Verheijen giving a seminar on 'Overview of mathematical modelling techniques'

Prof. Peter J.T. Verheijen, from Department of Biotechnology, Delft University of Technology , Netherlands, gave a seminar on 'Overview of mathematical modelling techniques' at the Institute of Nuclear Science & Technology on 9th November 2018.

In all areas of science and engineering the mathematical description of phenomena and processes play an important role. He presented the whole modeling process from construction via validation to the final use. Models were categorized and in each case the numerical procedure, the software implementation and specific problems were highlighted. Subsequently a structured approach to modelling was presented. He emphasized an ordered approach, also pointing out the pitfalls. Scenarios, sensitivity analysis and optimization are especially in use for engineering applications. It was concluded that benefits were achieved by mathematical modelling in terms of the gain in scientific insight, the economic savings, and the investment in future R+D.
