Location / Venue:

University of Nairobi

The first semester for the academic year 2018/2019 at the Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology commenced on 1st October 2018 with the reporting of the new students for the Master of Science in Nuclear Science Programme.

The new students were welcomed by the Prof. Michael J. Gatari, INST Director, and the entire staff at INST.
The Institute’s main objectives are to produce qualified nuclear scientists to carry out research in the applications of nuclear analytical techniques and general experimental nuclear physics. At present, the Institute has facilities to carry out a number of multidiscipline in collaboration with other University/ies and government departments in areas that utilize the facilities and techniques of x-ray fluorescence analysis (XRFA),
non-destructive testing (NDT), gamma analysis and neutron activation analysis (NAA) of the following:

  1. Geological materials (rocks, minerals, ores, soils, etc.)
  2. Biological materials (plants and animal tissues, urine, blood, etc.)
  3. Industrial products (alloys, food, pharmaceuticals, paints, engine oils, etc.)
  4.  Environmental pollution samples (water from rivers, lakes, rain, particulates in air, slurries, etc.)

The analytical results are useful in various studies of socio-economic development; pollution control studies, quality control in industry, etc. In addition, we have supporting facilities in nuclear electronics instrumentation, which is useful in maintenance and repair of our nuclear electronics equipment. There are plans to introduce additional facilities for; particle induced x-ray emission (PIXE), fast neutron activation analysis (FNAA), Mossbauer spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, microprobe analysis and non-destructive testing techniques to complement the existing application methods for research in hydrology, agriculture, medicine, geological dating, etc.
Over 100 postgraduate students have utilized these facilities for their M.Sc and Ph.D studies to date since inception. The institute has close collaboration with staff and inother Departments of the university and other local public universities for fully utilization of its facilities.
