The University of Nairobi joined the rest of the world in marking the World Accreditation Day on 7th June 2018 at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies. The event was organized by the Kenya Accreditation Service (KENAS) the sole National Accreditation Body mandated by government of Kenya to provide accreditation services. The event which was graced by Dr. Chris Kiptoo, (PS Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperative State Department for Trade), Ms. Betty Maina (PS, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperative State Department for Investment and Industry) and PS Ministry of East African Community & Northern Corridor Development.

In Addition to marking the World Accreditation Day, KENAS was celebrating the mutual recognition agreement by International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) and International Accreditation Forum (IAF). The will ensure and improves competence, confidence and credibility of local testing laboratories, inspection bodies and certification bodies that have been accredited by KENAS since once accredited, their accreditation will be recognise internationally. The new accreditation certificates which bear the ILAC and IAAF logos were unveiled and presented to Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABS).

The University of Nairobi Lighting Laboratory (UoN-LL) which is the first lab to be accredited in accordance to ISO17025:2015 to test off grid lighting products in Africa also received the new certificate. The certificate was presented to Prof. Michael Gatari, Ag. Director at the Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology in the College of Architecture and Engineering where the lab is located.
