The University of Nairobi- Lighting Laboratory has been accredited according to ISO/IEC 17025:2005 by the Kenya Accreditation Service (KENAS). the laboratory is located at the Institute of Nuclear Science & Technology and is first of its kind in East Africa.  This is a major step toward ensuring the quality of solar products being supplied to the East African market. Importers and local distributors can now have solar lanterns getting into the country tested.

With the accreditation, the Laboratory will now scale up their operation to ensure that local manufacturers and distributors of lighting products in Kenya and the East Africa region, as well as NGOs and government agencies, can bring in their lamps for a quick screening to ensure good products are supplied to Kenya market and thus boost the eroding customer confidence in solar lighting technology. This will minimize the substandard lanterns which have infiltrated the market lowering the confidence of customers on solar products. Consumers have fallen victim to overrated product claims and would purchase solar torches, task lamps or room lamps in an attempt to cut down on kerosene use, only to realize that the products do not live up to their expectations. Lighting Africa’s initial screening method is a quick reference to distinguish between substandard and quality products. Importers will now have an affordable avenue to test the products before importation.
